In the midst of the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, four young women from a Basque convent are suddenly forced to flee from a Francoist attack. With them is a precious gold cross adorned with rubies that hides a centuries-old secret.
Megan, Lucia, Graciela and Teresa – completely different characters – embark on a dangerous journey through war-torn Spain to the abbey in Mendavia. They are accompanied by the charismatic Basque freedom fighter Jaime Miró, whose head is wanted by both Francoists and the Spanish government.
Lucia is the seductive daughter of a mobster, Megan grew up in an orphanage and seeks revenge, fragile Graciela is running away from trauma, and Sister Teresa hides the biggest secret – she was once a secular woman who loved Jaime.
Through betrayals, love triangles, shootings and an escape across the Pyrenees, Sheldon builds a tense thriller in which passion, faith, revenge and the fight for freedom are intertwined. The cross becomes a symbol of fate, and the four nuns gradually remove their veils – both literally and metaphorically.
