Uz Kristalne rešetke, Vrata od utrobe su nesumnjivo vrhunac Kovačeve romaneskne umetnosti, ali i jedan od romanesknih vrhunaca novijeg romana na južnoslovenskom govornom području.

Roman Vrata od utrobo je najnagrađivaniji roman Mirka Kovača, ovenčan "NIN-ovom nagradom" - najprestižnijom nagradom za roman u južnoslovenskim krajevima 1978. godine i "Nagradom Željezare Sisak" 1979. godine. Bila je to najčitanija knjiga 1980. godine, a u izboru najuglednijih intelektualaca u časopisu Dani Vrata od utroba proglašena je za najbolji roman dvadesetog veka, odmah posle Derviša i smrti Meše Selimovića i Travničke hronike Ive Andrića.
