Like any good love story, this one happens at the moment when we least expect it, at the moment when everything around the protagonist is somehow brought to the edge. "This is how the story ends" takes place in the winter of 2008. Two people meet at a time when the world seems to be caught up in the drama of the US presidential election and the catastrophic decline of the global economy.

Bruno is a middle-aged American, a banker, who after losing his job comes to Ireland to search for his roots. There he meets Addie, an unemployed architect who is just recovering from a failed relationship. Their worlds collide, they fall in love, but very soon their relationship will be tested in a way they never thought possible...

This is a story about identity, the power of optimism, the inexorable passage of time, but also a story about two people who found joy in each other when they least expected it. This is a story about family, dogs and swimming in the sea, a story about the past, the future and the elusive skill of enjoying the present moment.
