Rane Luke Meštrevića

Rane Luke Meštrevića

Mirko Kovač

Luka Meštrević's Early Years is one of the most important works of Yugoslav literature, marked by Kovač's distinctive style and themes. The first edition was banned. This is the second, edited and supplemented edition of the book.

The novel Rana Luka Meštrevic follows the life of Luka Meštrevic, a young man from a Montenegrin coastal town, who grows up in poverty and difficult family circumstances. His father is strict and authoritarian, and his mother is a withdrawn and patient woman. Luka experiences loss and suffering early on, which shapes his world view and sense of not belonging.

His youth passes in a whirlwind of political turmoil, ideological conflicts and social injustices, and he searches for his own place in the world. Luka faces personal failures, love disappointments and existential questions. The novel deals with the themes of growing up, identity, social restrictions and the inner struggle of the individual.
