John Updike

"Couples" is a novel by John Updike, published in 1968, and considered one of his most important works. The novel follows the lives of about a dozen married couples in the fictional town of Tarbox during the period 1963-1964.

Updike's "couples" regularly hang out and often swap partners, leading to complex interpersonal relationships and moral dilemmas. Through detailed studies of relationships between men and women, Updike explores all the nuances of their relationships: marital, romantic and adulterous.

The novel provides a deep insight into the disintegration of middle-class marital ethics in American society at the height of prosperity, comparing it to the society of the Roman Empire before its fall. Updike depicts the middle class going through sexual rituals similar to the mythological atmosphere of Sodom and Gomorrah, which is associated with the approach of the apocalypse to the Western world.
