Santiago, who dreams of a treasure hidden near the pyramids of Egypt, decides to follow his dream after meeting a wise alchemist and King Melchizedek, who convince him to follow the signs of fate. He sells his flocks and sets off on a journey full of challenges. He is robbed in Tangier, but he does not give up. He finds work with a crystal merchant, where he learns about patience and hard work. Later, he joins a caravan to Egypt, where he meets an Englishwoman looking for an alchemist and learns about spiritual principles. In the oasis of Al-Fayoum, he falls in love with Fatima, who supports him in his search.

Meeting a true alchemist, who teaches him to turn lead into gold and listen to his heart, is a key moment. The alchemist teaches him that true treasure lies in following his dream and understanding the world. In the end, after many trials, including facing robbers, Santiago reaches the pyramids, but discovers that the treasure is not there, but in his homeland, under the tree where he dreamed.
