The novelist's mastery is evident in the way he tells the main story, which, despite all the excursions into peripheral events, flows in a way that keeps the reader's interest aroused until the last page.
This is precisely the quality that Hedwiga Courths-Mahler possesses in many of her novels, including this one. The main character of the novel, who connects the events and fates of the other characters, is the little girl Conny, the daughter of Frank Markwald, the only treasure left to her unhappy and deceived husband. But Conny is threatened by the desire of her evil mother and her lover to kidnap her and use her for blackmail. To save her, her father flees to the hills, where he meets an unusual girl, Freda, in a hotel. She stays here with her sister Blandina, followed by the infatuated Frieder.
