Grešna nedelja

Grešna nedelja

Tome Momirovski

The work combines elements of drama, eroticism, and social criticism, set in a summer that the main characters will remember forever.

The story takes place in a small Macedonian town, during a hot Sunday in 1963. The main character, a young man in puberty, observes the adult world through the prism of his own sexual and emotional curiosity. The novel addresses the themes of sexual awakening, hypocrisy, repressed passions, but also the political and moral climate of the time, which was marked by repression and false puritanism. The story intertwines the destinies of several characters from different social classes – teachers, politicians, housewives and young people – all trapped between the desires and norms imposed on them by society. Special focus is placed on the secret and double lives led by many of them, which symbolizes the broader picture of the society of the time. Momirovski's writing style is explicit, lively and authentic, with strong dialectal coloring and pronounced sensual descriptions. The novel often uses irony and sarcasm to expose the duplicity of the then "moral majority".
