Tata, ti si lud

William Saroyan

"Dad, You're Crazy", a novel by William Saroyan published in 1957, and in Croatia in 1958 in the Vjeverica library, is a moving and autobiographical story told from the perspective of a ten-year-old boy, Jamie, inspired by Saroyan's son Aram.

Set in California, the story follows Jamie and his father, an eccentric writer living an unconventional life after a divorce. The two spend the summer together, exploring the coast, talking about life, love, and art.

Saroyan portrays his father’s bohemian nature through Jamie’s eyes—from spontaneous outings to philosophical musings on freedom and individuality. The father, who rejects societal norms, teaches Jamie to appreciate simple joys, like fishing or dinnertime stories, while confronting his own insecurities as a parent. The novel is imbued with Saroyan’s optimism, warmth, and Armenian spirit, but also a subtle sadness about the family’s separation. Jamie’s honesty and childlike curiosity make the story universal, exploring themes of growing up, fatherhood, and the search for meaning.

The rare first edition from 1958 is prized for its limited edition and Saroyan’s popularity in Croatia. Translated into Croatian, the work retains the author's poetic style and emotional depth, making it a precious piece in a home collection.
