75 godina Šahovskog društva ˝Varaždin˝ : Varaždin 1904-1979
In Varaždin and its surroundings, as well as in the Croatian Zagorje and northwestern part of Croatia, the game of chess was known and accepted as early as the 16th and 17th centuries, and perhaps even earlier.
Later, chess was accepted by students, dachas, civil servants and other citizens of Varaždin, including merchants and craftsmen, as well as military personnel who held various positions in the city. Based on the data researched and established to date, the first chess organization to begin operating on the territory of Croatia was in Zagreb, at the end of the 19th century, and at the very beginning of the 20th century, the first chess organization was founded in Varaždin and registered with the competent authorities, so that these two are among the oldest registered chess organizations in Croatia. The "Varaždin" Chess Society, which is still the only one active in the city today, celebrated its great and significant jubilee in 1979, which is rare and exceptional for chess organizations in our country, the 75th anniversary of its existence and work. It continues the tradition of the "Varaždin Chess Society" founded in 1904 and the "Varaždin Chess Club" founded in 1922.
