The plot follows Kelsey Byden, a young history professor who researches ancient civilizations. She is given the opportunity to work on an archaeological dig in Central America, where she meets Jake Tully, the charismatic and slightly arrogant expedition leader. Kelsey and Jake initially clash due to their different approaches to the job – she is patient and scientifically precise, while he is impulsive and driven by instinct. However, as they uncover ancient secrets together, their attraction grows. In the background, the dangers of the rainforest, conflicts of interest within the team and the threat of important archaeological finds ending up in the wrong hands intertwine. The novel is a classic combination of romance, adventure and mystery, typical of the early Roberts – fast-paced action, chemistry between the main characters and an exotic setting that heightens the tension.
