Komedijaši

Komedijaši

Graham Greene

This is a dark yet satirical story that explores themes of political corruption, moral dilemmas, and the futility of human endeavor in a world filled with violence and fear.

The main character, Brown, is a cynical hotel owner in Port-au-Prince who returns to Haiti after a stint in Europe. His return coincides with political unrest, and the story follows his interactions with a variety of characters: Smith, an idealistic American who believes he can bring about change; Jones, a charming con man who claims to be a military expert; and Martha, Brown's lover, the wife of a German diplomat. All of them, in their own way, play the roles of "comedians"—people who feign importance or morality in a world where such values are questionable. Greene uses Haiti as a backdrop to examine human weakness, faith, and hypocrisy, with a scathing critique of colonialism and political opportunism. The novel is divided into three parts, and the narrative is imbued with Greene's characteristic blend of cynicism, humor, and existential questions. Through Brown's eyes, the reader witnesses the characters confront the dangers of dictatorship, including the infamous Tonton Macoute militia, while trying to preserve their own illusions of self.
