Zmijsko leglo

Andrea Camilleri

Snake's Nest (2008) is part of the series about Inspector Salvo Montalban. Set in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàtu, the novel combines criminal suspense, psychological depth, and Camilleri's signature humor with a critique of Sicily's social problems

The story begins with the discovery of the body of Giovanni Trincanato, a wealthy but hated businessman, shot dead in his villa. Montalbano, a skilled and intuitive inspector, takes on the case, initially suspecting suicide, but soon uncovers clues that point to murder. The investigation leads through a dark web of family secrets, greed, and betrayal. Trincanato, known for his immoral behavior, had many enemies, including his children, Arturo and Maria, and a series of mistresses.

Montalbano, with the help of his team, including Mimì Augello and the clumsy Catarelli, investigates financial embezzlement, inheritance, and hidden relationships. The discovery of compromising photographs and strange evidence, such as poisoned food, further complicates the case. Through interviews with the suspects, Montalbano uncovers a "nest of snakes" - a web of hatred and corruption within the family and the wider community. The truth about the killer and his motives emerges through Montalbano's patient analysis, revealing deep-seated traumas and revenge.

The novel explores themes of family dysfunction, power, and moral decay, with vivid descriptions of Sicilian culture, food, and dialect. Montalban's wit and humanity make him a compelling guide through this dark tale.
