Od Zagreba su ljepše samo Zagrepčanke

Zvonimir Milčec

In the tradition of Šenoa and Matoš, Milčec celebrates the charm and contribution of Zagreb women to the development of the city. If you love Zagreb anecdotes like Majer's, this is an eternal eulogy to the city – touching, humorous, for those who love wal

Zvonimir Milčec (1938–2014), a Croatian journalist and chronicler of Zagreb, a collection of feuilletons dedicated to the city's women, from famous to anonymous. Through history and legends, Milčec takes the reader through the lives of famous and lesser-known residents of Zagreb: from Marija Jambrišak and Milka Trnina to Zinka Milanov and Marija Šram. These are stories about love, work, political and cultural engagement – from queens to dancers, from boarding schools to world fashion and sports. Famous women, such as Barica Cindek or Dežman's ladies, are given portraits full of elegance, but also "ordinary" ones from dance halls or schools, who give the city a touch of elegance and love. The feuilletons are humorous, sentimental: encounters on the Square, evenings at the opera, intrigues in houses. Milčec mentions the legend of Manduševac, a symbol of femininity, and concludes: Zagreb is more beautiful because of them.
