Priča se odvija u Londonu 1990-ih kroz oči Melani „Mel“ Peper, žene u dvadesetim godinama iz južnog Londona koja radi dosadan posao u reklamnoj agenciji i živi sa svojom prijateljicom Lindom, koja se bori sa poremećajem u ishrani.

Mel i njena najbolja prijateljica Fren su šokirane kada saznaju da se njihova zla, ambiciozna Amanda – kraljica okrutnosti i tipična lenjost – udaje za Frejzera, ljubaznog škotskog plemića i Melovu bivšu studentsku ljubav. Verujući da Amanda želi samo njegov status i novac, one paniče i pokreću kampanju sabotaže: šire lažne glasine i organizuju neprijatne susrete na pretvenčanim događajima u Škotskoj. U njih je umešan Frejzerov brat Angus, grub, ali simpatičan saveznik.

Mel se bori sa komplikacijama: svojim dečkom Aleksom, pohlepnim računovođom sa problemima sa obavezama, i svojim obnovljenim osećanjima prema Frejzeru. Fren se upliće u nekonvencionalnu romansu. Roman meša humor i haos – farsične scene poput Amandinog pokušaja da izgleda kao veštica na probama venčanice – sa temama ljubomore, prijateljstva i samospoznaje. Živahan stil, pun britanskog sarkazma, čini likove dubokim: Amanda je složena, a Melinine nesigurnosti univerzalne.
