In the late eighteenth century, determined to exact revenge on the cult leader who murdered her family, Lady Leigh Strachan disguises herself as a young man and sets out in search of S. T. Maitland, a reclusive nobleman and outlaw once known as the Midnight Prince. The reluctant hero hides in a ruined castle in France, keeps a tame wolf as a pet, is deaf in one ear, suffers from vertigo, and seems rather sentimental compared to the steadfast Leigh.
