The book is not a classic novel or a theological work, but a series of spiritual meditations, dialogues, and "speeches" that the author claims were inspired to her from above.
The book consists of shorter sections that present:
moral and spiritual lessons,
interpretations of gospel events,
spiritual advice for everyday life,
reflections on love, sacrifice, forgiveness and the meaning of suffering,
encouragement for conversion and deepening faith.
He often draws on scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary, but Valtorta presents them in detail, meditatively and symbolically. The style is emphatically poetic, emotional and full of biblical motifs.
