When the Japanese capture Singapore in 1942, they capture twenty-two thousand Australians. Among them is a young Tasmanian doctor, Dorrigo Evans, who is trying to protect his countrymen from the cruel Major Nakamura. But the Australian prisoners are given an impossible task: to build a railway with their bare hands through the impenetrable forests of Siam. In a daily battle with disease and death, Dorrigo tries to stay calm by remembering the moment he first saw Amy, a blonde girl with a scarlet camellia. Although he thought he would never see her again, he is stunned when he comes across her at his uncle Keith's hotel. In the Siamese hell, other memories from the pre-war era fade, including his fiancée Ella. But when peace finally comes, Dorrigo, Nakamura and the other prisoners must face life in peace.
