The novel follows a married couple, Eduardo and Charlotte, who, after years of separation, are living in harmony again on their estate. When they invite two guests to join them, their emotional connections begin to change.
Affinity Selection is a novel that combines psychological analysis, social criticism, and scientific metaphor. Goethe depicts love relationships as forces similar to chemical processes: once two “substances” meet, their union cannot be easily separated. At the center is the harmonious but fragile marriage of Eduard and Charlotte, whose harmony is shattered by the arrival of the Captain and Ottilie. In the closed atmosphere of the country estate, all emotional tensions become intensified; the characters move between moral duty and the inner need for authentic love. Goethe particularly emphasizes the passive strength of Ottilie, whose silence and spirituality are interpreted by the characters as a moral ideal, but also as a challenge. The tragic fate of the child and Ottilie's death symbolize the price of violating natural and social laws. The novel remains open between romanticism and classicism: passion and fate collide with reason and the norm, while Goethe asks whether a person can ever fully control his own desires.
