The novel "Bewitched by Evil Forebodings" touches on the very current relations between Western civilization and Islam.
The French embassy in Cairo invites a young writer to Egypt for a conference as part of a literary fair. As he travels to Egypt, the narrator expects a boring week of literary discussions and official dinners, but he cannot foresee the unusual events that will ultimately lead to tragedy. Fascinated by Flaubert, the young writer imagines discovering the East that his famous predecessor described in letters as early as 1847. On the journey, he meets another, already famous Swiss writer, Martin Millet, whose views on art and the novel offend Islamic sensibilities. Millet tries in vain to go on a tour of Cairo's dark bars. Back in France, Millet publishes a book that causes a scandal and almost becomes the new Salman Rushdie.
