Nacrt grčkih i rimskih starina

August Musić

A survey of Greek and Roman antiquities that systematically presents the culture, society, religion, and political institutions of the ancient world. Written for schools and educated readers in the early 20th century.

An Outline of Greek and Roman Antiquities by A. Music, published in 1910, is one of the early systematic overviews of ancient culture intended for schools, students, and educated readers. The book provides a concise but thorough introduction to the basic components of the Greek and Roman worlds, with an emphasis on the historical development of their political, social, and religious institutions. The author adheres to the scientific standards of classical philology of the time and strives to present ancient civilization clearly, concisely, and in an educational spirit.

The section on The Greeks presents the most important phases of the development of Greek states, the organization of the polis, the Spartan and Athenian political systems, civic duties, and law. Religion, the relationship between gods and people, cults, ceremonies, the position of the family, the upbringing of youth, and military institutions are also discussed. At the same time, elements of everyday life are emphasized: housing, nutrition, clothing, and social customs.

The second part of the book is dedicated to The Romans, starting from the kingdom and early republicanism to the imperial era. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of patrician-plebeian relations, constitutional changes, magistracies, the senate, the popular assemblies, and the transformation of the Roman state order. Roman religion, family life, the military system, administration, and the spread of Roman influence that shaped later European culture are also covered.

Musić's approach is a combination of historical overview and cultural compendium, designed to provide the reader with a clear picture of the major institutions of antiquity, but also a broader cultural context that explains the lasting influence of the Greco-Roman heritage. As an educational book from the early 20th century, it represents a valuable example of an early high school and university textbook and an interesting testimony to the way in which ancient history and culture were interpreted at the time.
