U tajanstvenom carstvu: fantazija o traženju blaga starih Maja
A fascinating novel by Jack London about Professor Darrell Standing who, faced with the torments of prison, finds a way to free his spirit and travel through the past, reliving numerous forgotten lives.
The novel "In the Mysterious Realm" by Jack London is structured as a series of connected visions through which the main character, Professor Darrell Standing, in moments of extreme physical agony enters a deep trance and experiences his previous incarnations. Those episodes, although diverse in genre, complement each other and create a whole in which the limits of human consciousness and the question of the permanence of the soul are explored.
The first among these incarnations is Adam Standing, a sailor who survives a shipwreck and reaches the coast of Korea. There he clashes with other people's language, customs and the struggle for bare survival, while at the same time his resourcefulness and strength are revealed.
It follows the life of Guil laume de Sainte‑Maure, a French nobleman at court, where Standing experiences a world of court intrigue, behind-the-scenes battles and the fragile balance between honor and ambition. In this episode, London shows the complexity of social relations and the sensitivity of the position of the privileged.
The third fragment belongs to Daniel Foss, a man condemned to years of solitary survival on a deserted island. Foss's isolation offers the deepest meditation on the nature of man — on his endurance, fear, and the creation of meaning in complete solitude.
The last great incarnation is dr. Ossipon, a character placed in the context of scientific progress and political upheavals, who embodies the struggle for freedom of thought and revolutionary ideals. It reflects the spirit of the era of change and the search for intellectual liberation.
One thread runs through all these lives: the spirit cannot be broken. Standing's inner journeys override the cruelty of the prison system, and London uses motifs of reincarnation to highlight the idea that a person's essence extends beyond one body and one time. The novel thus becomes a layered meditation on freedom, identity and the indestructibility of human consciousness.
