Marija Konavoka

Mato Vodopić

A novel based on a true event from Konavle in the mid-19th century. The story of the beautiful Marija, her kidnapping, love, gang conflicts and tragic fate in the rich ethnographic framework of Konavle life.

Marija Konavoka by Mato Vodopić is one of the most important and widely read works of 19th-century Dubrovnik and Dalmatian literature. Subtitled as "based on a true event from the time before the Austrian annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina", the novel was created based on real events that the author personally witnessed as a parish priest in Gruda in Konavle.

The story follows the fate of the young and beautiful Marija from a prominent Konavle family, her love, engagement, kidnapping and tragic end. Through the plot, Vodopić skillfully depicts conflicts between individual Konavle villages and gangs (the Upper and Lower gangs), customs, weddings, Christmas Eve, baptismal names, fairs, outlawry and the everyday life of the people of Konavle in the first half of the 19th century. The work abounds in rich ethnographic descriptions, local speech and folk expressions, which gives it a special documentary value.

Mato Vodopić (1816–1893), bishop of Dubrovnik, writer and naturalist, spent twelve years as a parish priest in Gruda, where he got to know the everyday life of Konavle firsthand. The novel remained unfinished; after Vodopić's death, it was completed by Juraj Carić and Marcel Kušar, who also wrote an extensive introduction about the author's life and work.

The 1893 edition is considered a true bibliophile rarity. Copies in solid condition are very rare on the market and are highly valued among collectors of Croatian antiquarian books, especially those who collect 19th-century Dubrovnik and Dalmatian literature. Due to its ethnographic significance and role in the development of the Croatian realistic novel, this is a fundamental work for any serious collection of old Croatian books.

Marija Konavle is not just a romantic tale with a tragic ending – it is a living monument to Konavle culture and customs, one of the most authentic depictions of life in Konavle in the 19th century. A must-read for lovers of Dalmatian literature, regional history and antiquarian editions.
