Sigrid Undset

In cold Norway, Torkild has loved Rosa, whom he has known since childhood, all his life. After their love finally comes true and they marry, they face jealousy, family intrigues, and deep crises.

Spring (1914) is an early realistic novel by Norwegian Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset, published before her great medieval works. The story is set in Norway at the beginning of the 20th century. The main characters are Torkild Christensen and Rosa Wegener.

Torkild has been secretly in love with Rosa since childhood. After a long wait, their love finally comes true and they get married. But the idyll is quickly disrupted: relatives, friends and her own deep emotional wounds from the past interfere in the marriage – jealousy, insecurity and excessive expectations.

Undset masterfully depicts the psychology of marriage, everyday conflicts and internal crises. The novel shows how love can weaken, but also how through suffering and responsibility it can reach maturity and renewal. “Spring” here is a symbol of hope and a new beginning after a long emotional winter.

The style is precise, introspective and realistic, with a deep understanding of the human psyche. Although less well-known than Kristin Lavransdatter, this novel heralds the themes that Undset would become famous for: marriage, sacrifice, responsibility, and spiritual growth.
