The Memorial Book of the Croatian National Foundation from 1842 to 1892 was a ceremonial edition published in 1892 in Zagreb by the Croatian National Foundation. The authors were two prominent Croatian intellectuals – historian Tadija Smičiklas and writer and philosopher Franjo Marković.
The book was written on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Croatian National Foundation (1842–1892) and represents a ceremonial overview of its half-century of activity. Smičiklas wrote an extensive historical overview of the founding, development and cultural role of the Foundation during the Illyrian movement, absolutism and the Croatian national revival. Marković contributed literary and cultural reviews.
The work contains a detailed chronological overview of the work of the Foundation: publishing activities, literary, scientific and educational undertakings, the struggle for the Croatian language and national culture, and cooperation with other Slavic peoples. It is richly illustrated with twelve pictures (portraits of the founders and deserving members) and one copy of the manuscript.
The Memorial Book has great documentary value because it provides numerous data, names of collaborators, lists of publications and an overview of cultural events in 19th-century Croatia. The style is solemn, patriotic and typical of that period. Today it is considered an important historical source for the study of the Croatian cultural and national revival and the activities of the Matica Hrvatska in its first fifty years.
