Demon: istočna povest

Mihail Jurjevič Ljermontov

A lyrical-epic poem about the Fallen Spirit who seduces Tamara in the Caucasus. Faced with her purity, he desires redemption, but the angelic order rejects him; Tamara dies, and the Demon remains condemned to eternal solitude.

Demon (1830–1841) Mikhail Lermontov is one of the key romantic poems of Russian literature and a paradigmatic depiction of the superfluous man in a metaphysical key. It was written in several editions, and its final form combines lyrical suggestion, epic narrative, and a philosophical discussion on evil, freedom, and the possibility of salvation. The setting is the Caucasus: a landscape of mountains, gorges, monasteries, and castles forms a symbolic stage for the conflict between heaven and the rebellious spirit.

At the center is a fallen spirit — Demon — who experiences the world with ironic contempt and cosmic boredom. His gaze destroys order, but he is simultaneously intoxicated by beauty and power. His encounter with Tamara, a girl whose purity and melancholy are accentuated by the tragic loss of her fiancé, opens up the possibility of transformation: The Demon promises her endless love and liberation from suffering.

Lermontov builds a tension between the seductive word and the moral order. The guardian angel and the monastic discipline embody the boundary that the Demon cannot cross without giving up his arrogance. Tamara, torn between longing and fear, becomes the place where the question is broken: can evil be transformed by love or does love become just another face of arbitrariness?

The ending is tragic and instructive: Tamara dies of a saved soul, while the Demon remains deprived of the blessing and is returned to solitude, now even deeper because he has experienced what he cannot have. The style abounds in antitheses of light and darkness, musical rhythm and visual expression of the Caucasian landscape; in terms of genre, the poem stands at the crossroads of Byronic demonism and Russian tradition, with elements of folk epic and Orthodox symbolism.
