Izgon Mongola iz Hrvatske

Ante Tresić-Pavičić

The book The Expulsion of the Mongols from Croatia, published in 1942 on the occasion of the seven hundredth anniversary of the Mongol invasion and the events of 1242, is one of the most famous historical works by Ante Tresić-Pavičić.

The author deals with the dramatic period of the Mongol conquests in Central Europe, with special emphasis on their penetration into the Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom and the consequences that this invasion left on Croatian lands. The work was published at the time of the celebration of seven centuries since the events that are associated in Croatian historical tradition with the legendary Battle of Grobnik Field.

Tresić-Pavičić systematically studies historical sources on the Mongol invasion, analyzes political conditions in Europe during the 13th century, and describes the campaign of the Mongol armies led by the famous military leader Subutai. He pays special attention to the escape and rescue of King Béla IV, whose fate is closely connected with the Croatian territory during the Mongol invasion. The author seeks to shed light on the circumstances of the Mongol retreat from Croatia and Hungary and considers different interpretations of this event.

The central place in the book is occupied by a discussion of Grobnik Field and the legend according to which the Croatian forces inflicted a decisive defeat on the Mongols there. Tresić-Pavičić critically examines existing documents, historical sources and different interpretations, raising questions about the credibility of individual documents and chronicles. In this way, the work goes beyond the framework of popular history and becomes a contribution to the historiographical debate on one of the most interesting issues of the Croatian Middle Ages.

Written in a lively and accessible style, the work connects scientific research, national history and cultural tradition. Today it represents a valuable source for the study of Croatian historiography, medieval history and the development of interpretations of the Mongol invasion and its place in Croatian historical memory.
