Novovjeki izumi u znanosti, obrtu i umjetnosti II

Bogoslav Šulek, Mijo Kišpatić, Ljudevit Rossi

Modern Inventions in Science, Crafts and Art II (1883) is the second volume of the famous Matica series that brings contemporary technical and industrial inventions closer to Croatian readers and promotes scientific literacy and Croatian professional term

Modern inventions in science, craft and art is the second book in the famous Matica series, published in 1883. The work was written by Bogoslav Šulek, Mijo Kišpatić and Ljudevit Rossi with the aim of introducing the most important achievements of modern science, technology and industry to a wide range of readers. The book is part of an extremely popular series that has become synonymous with popular science literature in Croatian culture and has played an important role in spreading technical knowledge and creating Croatian professional terminology.

The authors cover inventions and technological processes that marked the industrial age. Special attention is paid to paper, measuring instruments, optical devices, photography, glass and porcelain production and other achievements that enabled the faster development of science, craft and industry. The book is richly illustrated with 165 images and several appendices, which made it easier for readers to understand complex technical processes.

The importance of the work lies not only in its presentation of technical innovations but also in its enlightening role. Šulek, one of the most important creators of Croatian scientific terminology, together with his collaborators, seeks to prove that the Croatian language can serve equally for the description of contemporary scientific and technical phenomena. The book therefore connects education, national culture and technological progress.

The work represents a valuable document of the times of accelerated modernization and testifies to the efforts of Croatian intellectuals of the 19th century to make scientific knowledge available to the wider public. Due to its popularity and influence, it is considered one of the most significant popular-scientific publications in Croatian cultural history.
