John Grisham

The Pelican Brief by John Grisham is a classic legal thriller published in 1992. It is one of Grisham's most famous and successful novels, becoming an international bestseller and being adapted into a film starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington in 1993.

The story begins dramatically: two US Supreme Court justices are murdered within a short period of time. A young law student, Darby Shaw, whose professor and lover Thomas Callahan is close to one of the murdered men, decides to investigate the case. She writes a daring conspiracy theory she calls the Pelican Brief. In it, she links the murders to a powerful oil billionaire, Victor Mattiece, who wants to obtain a permit to drill for oil in the Louisiana swamps - a protected area for pelicans and a sensitive ecosystem.

Darby's document soon ends up in the hands of influential people, including the White House. From that moment on, her nightmare begins: everyone who reads the document soon ends up dead. Darby must flee, hide, and fight for her life, and with the help of Washington Post journalist Gray Grantham, she tries to uncover a vast conspiracy that reaches all the way to the highest circles of power.

Grisham masterfully builds tension, depicting corruption, the power of money, and political intrigue. The novel is full of twists, chases, and dangers, but also an intelligent critique of the American legal and political system. The main character, Darby Shaw, is one of the strongest female characters in Grisham's bibliography - smart, brave, and determined.

"The Pelican Brief" is an exciting, fast-paced thriller that perfectly combines legal drama, political conspiracy, and a personal story of survival. A classic of the genre that is still read in one breath today.
