The story is set in the Norwegian forest regions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and follows several generations of the Björndal family, whose life and identity are inextricably linked to nature, tradition and the family estate.

At the center of the story is Dag Björndal, a strong, proud and just lord who strives to preserve his family's reputation despite long-standing conflicts and prejudices from his surroundings. In the first novel, we learn about his rise, maturation and marriage to Adelheid, which connects two completely different worlds.
