John Grisham

After the theft of Fitzgerald's manuscripts from Princeton, writer Mercer Mann travels to Camino Island to get close to rare book dealer Bruce Cable and uncover the truth.

The Lost Manuscript is a suspenseful crime novel by John Grisham that begins with the spectacular theft of five original F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts from the Princeton University library. The valuable documents disappear in a carefully planned robbery, and the trail soon leads to Bruce Cable, a charismatic bookstore owner on Camino Island, Florida, who also runs a lucrative rare book business.

To get the evidence, people connected to the insurance company hire Mercer Mann, a young writer and professor in financial trouble. Her assignment is to move to the island, enter Bruce Cable's literary circle, and discover if he is the one hiding the stolen manuscripts. But Mercer gradually becomes closer to Bruce and meets a peculiar community of writers, collectors, and dealers, which makes the line between assignment and personal involvement increasingly blurred.

The novel combines literary atmosphere, deceit, greed and suspense, and Grisham guides the story through secret deals, double-dealing and the danger that grows as Mercer gets closer to the truth. The novel is not just about stolen manuscripts, but also about the lengths people will go for money, prestige and an obsession with rare books.
