The action takes place in Hong Kong in 1949/1950, during the chaotic period of the Chinese Civil War and the beginning of the Korean War. Eurasian doctor Han Suyin (widow) works in a hospital and meets married British-American journalist Mark Elliott. A passionate love is born between them, but they face social prejudices, racial and cultural differences, family pressures and political instability.
The novel is not just a romantic story - Han Suyin vividly describes the life of refugees, the conflict between East and West, Chinese culture and everyday life in colonial Hong Kong. He combines intimate love drama with historical and political context, writing with honesty and attention to detail.
