Deutsche Gedichte des 19. Jahrhunderts

Deutsche Gedichte des 19. Jahrhunderts

Deutsche Gedichte des 19. Jahrhunderts is an anthology edited in 1984 by the distinguished German writer, poet, and essayist Peter Härtling (1933–2017) for the Deutscher Bücherbund.

Härtling, known for his novels, biographies and his own lyrics, offers here a personal selection of the most important and most beautiful German poems of the 19th century. The collection covers the period from Romanticism to early Modernism and presents key poets of the time – among them Hölderlin, Eichendorff, Mörike, Heine, Droste-Hülshoff, Fontane and many others.

The editor did not aim for a complete overview, but rather a carefully selected, lively and readable selection that reveals a wealth of themes: love, nature, nostalgia, politics, death and everyday life. Härtling's sensibility as a poet and literary connoisseur gives the anthology a personal touch – it is not a dry collection, but an invitation to rediscover the classics.

The book is intended both for poetry lovers and readers who want to enter the world of German lyrics of the 19th century through a reliable and aesthetically strong selection.
