After a stint in a psychiatric institution, low-circulation newspaper reporter Camille Preaker is assigned to investigate the brutal murders of two girls in her hometown of Wind Gap. Returning to the province is difficult for her, not only because the local police try to hide the details of the investigation from her, but also because she is reunited with her mother, who has remarried and is struggling to maintain the appearance of a happy family. As she uncovers the truth about the murders, Camille increasingly identifies with the murdered girls, and if she is to survive her temporary return to her hometown, she must confront what happened to her many years ago...
