Like A Prayer (1989) is Madonna's fourth studio album, hailed as her most personal and mature work of the 1980s, led by the anthology title hit and a duet with Prince.

Released in March 1989 on Sire and Warner Bros., Like A Prayer marked a turning point in Madonna's career, transforming her from a global pop icon to an acclaimed and mature singer-songwriter. Imbued with themes of family, Catholic upbringing, marital challenges and personal introspection, the album brings a significantly deeper and more intimate textual approach. Musically, it represents an extremely rich blend of pop, funk, gospel choir, dance-pop and rock elements, with top-notch production signed by Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and the legendary Prince, along with Madonna.

The album brought out a number of huge world hits. The title track "Like A Prayer", with its powerful gospel chorus and famous, controversial music video, has become one of the most recognizable pop classics of all time. Along with it, the dance feminist anthem "Express Yourself", the touching tribute to the mother "Promise to Try", the emotional ballad "Oh Father" and the energetic hit "Keep It Together" stand out. Recognized by critics as a masterpiece of the 80s, Like A Prayer sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and permanently confirmed Madonna's status as a leading innovator of contemporary pop music.
