Mary Higgins Clark

A suspenseful crime novel about a lawyer named Emily who moves to an old town after a family tragedy. While investigating unsolved murders from the past, she becomes the target of a serial killer.

"On the Street Where You Live", a suspenseful thriller by the celebrated American author Mary Higgins Clark (published in Croatian translation in 2002), is an extremely exciting work that skillfully interweaves family drama, historical secrets and psychological tension. The plot follows a young and successful New York lawyer, Emily Graham, who, in search of peace after a painful divorce and a dangerous experience with stalking, decides to move to the historic town of Spring Lake, New Jersey. Emily buys and renovates an old family home that once belonged to her great-great-grandmother Victoria, a girl who mysteriously disappeared in 1892. However, the idyllic beginning of a new life is abruptly interrupted by a horrific discovery: during yard work, two bodies are found. One belongs to the missing Victoria, and the other to a young woman murdered in the 1970s. Emily realizes that both victims were connected by the same pattern and the same sinister motive, which begins a dangerous race against time to expose the killer whose vicious practice has lasted for more than a century. Written in a recognizable, fast-paced and dynamic style with many unexpected twists, the book keeps the reader in suspense until the very end. "On Your Street" is a superb example of modern crime fiction in which the author masterfully builds atmosphere and elaborates the motif of danger lurking in the immediate vicinity.
