Susan-Elizabeth Phillips

The novel The First Lady by popular American author Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a vivid and humorous blend of political drama, sharp social satire and passionate romantic story. The plot centers on Cornelia "Corny" Sterling, a famously unbridled and globally adored Hollywood actress whose life revolves around glamour, scandal and independence. Her everyday life changes radically when she suddenly marries Tyler Vaughn, a handsome, serious and ambitious Texas governor who is widely considered the frontrunner for the new President of the United States.

Upon entering the political arena, Corny must overnight give up her free-spirited lifestyle and adapt to the strict, hypocritical rules of the Washington elite. Her free-spirited character, penchant for sharp humorous commentary and refusal to play the traditional, dutiful political wife cause chaos in the presidential campaign, but at the same time win the sympathy of a disillusioned public. As the couple grapples with media intrigue, political adversaries, and old traumas from the past, their public arrangement gradually evolves into a sincere but stormy love affair.

Phillips skillfully combines fast-paced dialogue, ironic depictions of election intrigue, and deeper emotional transformations in her characters. The novel offers an entertaining yet thoughtful account of what it looks like when the glittering world of entertainment collides with the cold machinery of political power, celebrating the strength of a woman who refuses to lose her voice under the weight of public expectations.
