Olga i Lina

Olga i Lina

Eugen Kumičić

A naturalistic novel about the conflict between the honest and naive Olga and the callous schemer Lina, whose greed and immorality destroy a noble family and lead to tragic fates.

"Olga and Lina" (1881) is Eugen Kumičić's first novel and one of the key works that introduced the poetics of naturalism into Croatian literature. The plot hinges on the sharp contrast and conflict between two female characters who symbolize diametrically opposed moral and social values in late 19th-century Zagreb. On one side stands Olga—a noble, modest, and sincere young woman representing traditional family values and integrity. On the other is Lina—an exceptionally calculating, greedy, and callous schemer who stops at nothing to achieve material gain and climb the social ladder. Lina seduces Olga’s fiancé, Count Ladislav, invests in his estate with the aim of seizing it, and systematically destroys the entire family, driving them to financial and moral ruin. In the novel, Kumičić offers a detailed portrayal of the corruption within Zagreb’s bourgeois and aristocratic society, a milieu susceptible to manipulation and base passions. Through a rapid succession of dramatic events, intrigues, and a tragic conclusion, the author consistently employs naturalistic techniques, highlighting the destructive power of human greed, ruthlessness, and immorality.
