Pet godina samoće

Pet godina samoće

Nenad Čanak

A collection of political essays and articles by Nenad Čanak, written during the war period (1989–1994), in which the author sharply criticizes the Milošević regime, the war policy, and the rise of nationalism in Serbia.

The book Five Years of Solitude (1994) is a collection of political writings by the Vojvodina-based politician and activist Nenad Čanak, created in response to one of the most dramatic periods in the recent history of the Balkans. Bringing together texts, speeches, and essays written over a five-year span (1989–1994), the book serves as a testament to the breakup of Yugoslavia from the perspective of a steadfast anti-war opposition figure. In his writings, the author uncompromisingly dissects the Serbian political landscape of the era, placing particular emphasis on criticizing Slobodan Milošević’s regime, the rise of aggressive nationalism, and the suppression of Vojvodina’s autonomy. The "solitude" of the title symbolizes the isolation of those individuals and political forces who, amidst the prevailing war euphoria, dared to oppose warmongering propaganda and military conflict. Čanak writes in a distinctive, sharp, polemical, and often satirical style, addressing media censorship, war crimes, the erosion of social values, and the refugee crisis. Beyond its historical and political documentary value, the work offers insight into the continuity of the author's struggle for regionalization, demilitarization, and a civil society.
