Jack London

Jack London's thrilling adventure novel follows Jerry, an Irish Terrier, as he endures captivity, dangers, and severe trials in the Solomon Islands, celebrating canine loyalty and courage.

The novel "Jerry of the Islands" (1917) is one of the last great adventure works of the American writer Jack London. Continuing the author's well-known tradition of storytelling from the perspective of animals (like the novels "The Call of the Wild" and "The White Fang"), this work is distinguished by the exotic setting of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The main character is Jerry, a thoroughbred red Irish terrier of exceptional intelligence and loyalty. After being separated from his first master, Jerry ends up on a ship transporting native labor, and shortly after the shipwreck he falls into the captivity of a local tribe on the island of Malaita. Through a series of tense and dramatic episodes, the author shows how a noble and loyal dog manages in a completely unknown, harsh and dangerous environment. Despite difficult trials, wild animals and conflicts, Jerry remains true to his instincts and natural nobility until he meets again with people who know how to appreciate his loyalty. Although the work reflects certain colonial and racial prejudices of its time, it stands out for its extremely vivid descriptions of tropical nature, its understanding of dog psychology, and the timeless theme of the unwavering connection and friendship between man and dog.
