Hrvatsko kolo, 1946

The second postwar annual volume, published in 1946, brings together poetry, fiction, literary and historical essays, and art, offering a cross-section of Croatian cultural life.

The 1946 volume of Hrvatsko kolo offers a literary, scholarly and artistic cross-section of the early postwar period. Poetry, prose, criticism, historical studies and illustrations reflect the encounter between cultural traditions and a changing social and political order.

Contributions include Vladimir Nazor’s Posljednja pčela, Grigor Vitez’s Proljeće 1945, Vesna Parun’s Zemlja and Nikola Polić’s Krvava klepsidra. Other contributors include Petar Šegedin, Šime Vučetić, Stanislav Šimić, Ljerka Premuž and Božena Begović, alongside translations of Louis Aragon, Maxim Gorky and Dante.

Critical and historical essays address works by Vladimir Nazor, Svetozar Marković’s views, Balzac and the development of storytelling. Rudolf Bićanić examines social structure, Ferdo Čulinović discusses Croatian assemblies, and Grgo Gamulin considers an exhibition of painting and sculpture by the peoples of Yugoslavia.

Further subjects include modern architecture, the Bijelo Brdo culture and Russian writers in Croatian National Revival literature. Art reproductions feature works by Antun Augustinčić, Vlaho Bukovac, Vjekoslav Karas and Đorđe Andrejević Kun, among others. The collection provides material for exploring literature, cultural history and public discourse in the immediate aftermath of war.
