Razvoj i sustav obćenite estetike
A foundational work of Croatian aesthetics combining a history of European thought on beauty with a systematic study of artistic form, aesthetic experience and moral value. Reprint of the 1903 edition.
Franjo pl. Marković’s Razvoj i sustav obćenite estetike is a foundational work of Croatian philosophical heritage. First published in 1903, it combines a historical survey of European aesthetic thought with the author’s systematic examination of beauty, art and aesthetic judgement.
Drawing on the philosophical tradition of Johann Friedrich Herbart and Robert Zimmermann, Marković pays particular attention to form and the relationships between the elements of an aesthetic whole. Beauty does not reside solely in an isolated property of an object: it emerges through relationships that shape the overall impression. Aesthetics therefore connects cognition and feeling while also exploring the relationship between artistic and moral values.
The book’s significance extends beyond the history of a particular philosophical school. Marković contributed to the development of Croatian philosophical terminology and sustained discussion of art in the Croatian language. His work offers insight into intellectual life at the turn of the twentieth century, when Croatian academic philosophy was developing through engagement with European ideas. A valuable text for readers interested in aesthetics, the history of philosophy, art theory and Croatian cultural history.
