The novel is set in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman rule. It tells the story of the life of Ali Pasha, his love for the girl Almasa, and his fight against injustice.
"Free" is a memoir about growing up amidst political turmoil, about a family whose history is intertwined with the history of the country, and also an insightful reflection on the limits of progress and the burden of the past.
The book contains chronologically arranged stories published during Kafka's lifetime, except for the last four, which he approved for publication but, unfortunately, did not live to see publication.
Ignored and harassed by the authorities, surviving on the help of relatives and publishing children's rhymes, this ingenious marginal left behind a veritable treasure trove of strange stories and twisted thoughts in his notes and notebooks.
