Đakovo

Đakovo

Zdravka Dean, Krešimir Pavić, Andrija Šuljak

A comprehensive overview of the history, culture and social development of the city of Đakovo from its beginnings to the modern era. A monograph published on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary.

Located in the heart of Slavonia, Đakovo has been an important economic, religious and cultural center for centuries, known for its Cathedral of St. Peter, the symbol of the city and one of the most significant examples of historicist architecture in Croatia.

The work describes in detail the development of Đakovo from Roman times, through medieval dioceses, to Ottoman rule and the later period under the Habsburgs. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the Đakovo Diocese, which shaped the spiritual and administrative life of the region from the 13th century. The authors analyze the economic progress in the 19th century, when Đakovo became a commercial and craft center, along with the development of agriculture, especially viticulture and horse breeding, for which the city is famous (Lipican horses).

The book also explores cultural life, including literary and artistic contributions, and the tradition of Đakovo Embroidery, an event celebrating Slavonian folklore. Special attention is paid to social changes in the 20th century, including the impact of wars and political turmoil. Based on archival sources and richly illustrated, the book offers a comprehensive insight into the identity of Đakovo as a city that combines tradition and modernity.
