Was wir unter dem Namen Weltliteratur des westlichen Kreises verstehen, erstreckt sich räumlich von Buenos Aires bis Moskau und von Athen bis San Francisco und umfasst zeitlich fast tausend Jahre, von der Mitte des Mittelalters bis in unsere Tage. Eine kurze Kenntnis dieser Literatur gilt seit langem als wesentlicher Bestandteil einer guten Bildung, die nicht nur literarisch, sondern auch kulturgeschichtlich ist. Dieses Buch folgt der genannten Literatur in all ihren Formen: Genre (Lyrik, Prosa, Drama) und Stilformation (von der Renaissance bis zur Postmoderne unserer Tage).
