The novel by the Italian author couple is a historical thriller set in Rome in 1683. The plot takes place in the tense atmosphere of Baroque Rome, where political intrigue, religious conflicts, and secret conspiracies intertwine with a dangerous epidemic.

The story begins at the Locanda del Donzello inn, where the guests, including a young apprentice, are forced into quarantine due to suspected plague after the death of a French nobleman. The death seems natural at first, but the apprentice, with the help of the mysterious Abbot Atto Melani, begins to suspect murder. Melani, a real-life historical figure and castrato-singer acting as a spy in the service of King Louis XIV of France, leads a complex investigation that uncovers a web of conspiracies.

As the quarantine continues, the characters—a motley crew of travelers, including an English doctor, a Spanish guitarist, and a Dutch merchant—uncover their secrets. The investigation leads to shocking revelations about the power struggle between the Papacy, France, and the Ottoman Empire, as Europe trembles before the Turkish siege of Vienna. A document called the Imprimatur, which could change the course of history, is at the center of the plot.

Monaldi and Sorti create a rich tapestry of historical detail, blending real events with fiction. The novel explores themes of power, manipulation, and truth, set in the tense atmosphere of a claustrophobic inn. The layered plot and detailed characterization make Imprimatur an intellectually stimulating thriller.
