Kraljev gambit

Branka Slijepčević

The King's Gambit by Branka Slijepčević is a novel about a generation born after World War II that faces unfulfilled ambitions, disillusionment, disappointments in love, and the transience of life.

The King's Gambit is a novel by Croatian writer Branka Slijepčević that follows several interconnected characters, members of the Zagreb post-war generation. They were once connected by their student days, friendships, love, and the belief that they had open possibilities ahead of them. Twenty years later, they find themselves in a period of their lives when it becomes clear that many plans will not come true.

The novel is not centered on major events, but on relationships between people. Old friends meet again, and through conversations, their true life balances gradually come to light. Some remain trapped in unsatisfying marriages, some have given up on professional ambitions, and some try to hide their feeling of failure behind apparent social security. One of the important motifs of the novel is marital infidelity, which sets off a chain of conflicts and forces the characters to question their own decisions and feelings.

The author pays great attention to dialogues. Through witty, often ironic conversations, old rivalries, jealousies, unrealized loves, and disappointments are revealed. The characters try to preserve their dignity, but it gradually becomes clear how far they have fallen from the ideals they had in their youth. The novel gains additional weight with the appearance of death, which confronts them with the transience and finality of life.

The title gambit symbolizes life moves that the characters once considered wise and necessary, but which over time turned out to be sacrifices without the expected reward. The King's Gambit thus becomes a novel about a generation that slowly realizes that life does not consist of great victories but of the consequences of decisions it made much earlier.
