Mohamed Choukris Roman Bare Bread ist eine kraftvolle autobiografische Geschichte über Armut, Hunger und den Kampf um Würde im Marokko der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Der aus einer äußerst armen Familie stammende Autor schildert seine von Gewalt, Verlust und Armut geprägte Kindheit. Choukri sieht sich grausamen Lebensbedingungen gegenüber, verliert Familienmitglieder und rennt vor seinem tyrannischen Vater davon.

Das Werk zeichnet seine Verwandlung von einem ungebildeten Jungen, der auf der Suche nach Nahrung durch die Straßen wandert, zu einem jungen Mann nach, der in Bildung und Literatur Erlösung findet. Die brutale Ehrlichkeit und Rohheit der Sprache spiegelt die Realität marginalisierter Teile der Gesellschaft wider, während der Roman gleichzeitig die menschliche Widerstandskraft und das Streben nach einem besseren Leben feiert.

Bare Bread ist eine universelle Geschichte über Überleben und Emanzipation und wird zur Stimme der Entrechteten und zum Symbol für den Kampf gegen soziale Ungerechtigkeit.
