Elena wird erstochen in ihrer Werkstatt aufgefunden, und Montalbano beginnt zu ermitteln und dringt in ihr Privatleben und ihre Beziehungen zu Kunden ein.

Die Ermittlungen decken ein komplexes Netz aus Liebesaffären, Eifersucht und Hintergedanken auf. Montalbano verhört mit Hilfe seines Teams, darunter Mimì Augello und der tollpatschige Catarelli, Verdächtige – von Elenas Liebhaber bis hin zu eifersüchtigen Rivalen. Wichtige Hinweise, wie kryptische Nachrichten und Details vom Tatort, führen ihn zur Entlarvung des Täters. Gleichzeitig ringt Montalbano mit seinem eigenen Gerechtigkeitssinn, als er das Leid der Migranten miterlebt, was ihn dazu bringt, über Menschlichkeit und Moral nachzudenken.

Der Roman behandelt Themen wie Gerechtigkeit, Mitgefühl und soziale Ungleichheit und liefert anschauliche Beschreibungen Siziliens, seiner Küche und seines Dialekts. Montalbans Witz und Einfühlungsvermögen machen ihn zu einem fesselnden Protagonisten in diesem komplexen und emotionalen Fall.
