Micek, Mucek i Dedek

Mato Lovrak

A popular children's novel by Mate Lovrak, first published in 1939. Illustrated by the famous artist Andrija Maurović, the book is one of Lovrak's early bestsellers for children.

The plot follows a boy Micek, whose parents work all day, so he spends a lot of time with his grandfather Dedek and his tamed rabbit Mucek. The story is told in lively, humorous language, full of adventurous elements, children's imagination and everyday incidents. Lovrak masterfully depicts the world of children, the relationship between grandson and grandfather, and the warmth of family life in a pre-war Croatian village and town. The emphasis is on friendship, responsibility, ingenuity and the simple joys of childhood.

The work is entertaining, but also educational – it promotes values such as solidarity, care for animals and intergenerational understanding. Due to its popularity, it was later republished several times (Mladost, Mozaik knjiga, etc.), and was dramatized and performed in the theater (HNK Zagreb as early as 1941).

Mato Lovrak (1899–1974) is one of the most important Croatian children's writers between the two wars and after. He is known for classic titles such as Train in the Snow, The Company of Pero Kvržica and The Brave Nine. In Micek, Mucek and Dedek he shows exceptional sensitivity to child psychology, imagination and gentle humor that has attracted generations of readers.

The first edition from 1939 is today a rarity and sought-after antiquarian copy. The book is written in lively, accessible language that children can easily read and adults can follow with pleasure. It remains a classic example of Croatian children's literature that combines entertainment and educational values without excessive moralizing.

The novel emphasizes how even good can have bad consequences when taken out of proportion, and that responsibility, morality, and honesty are more important than wealth itself.
